Reviving & Driving 600 Miles a Broken V12 BMW E31 850i While on Honeymoon - Project Phoenix
Honeymoon with a broken V12 BMW that's been off the road for 7 years. Sounds perfect, right? Well, it is! I found this time capsule, a totally original 1991 E31 850i with the rare 6-speed manual transmission in a garage in Phoenix, Arizona. The plan is to revive right there on the spot and drive it to California.

    16:21 My father, who is an even greater tool fanatic than he is a mechanic, recently explained to me where the name "Hazet" comes from and how to pronounce it. It comes from the initials of the company founder, Hermann Zerver. It's pronounced like germans would say H Z. So you're close but you need to say it with a bit more german anger ;)

    Hello, I like your work, but in this case wouldn't it be better and more comfortable to do it with the engine outside the car? And I would like to add that there are some comments that disparage "all" the mechanics, but from my own experience the clients shape the mechanics, that is, doing that same job is complicated if the client wants the car now. Not everyone would pay for that. and there are clients, strangely enough, who don't care about cleanliness!

    In knowing that the Valves have contacted the pistons at some point - should you measure also, to ensure that all pistons are reaching their (intended) TDC. This might indicate a bent Connecting Rod. I always say, that (when the performance goes up), the reliability comes down. It's a helluva job, knowing every aspect of the Exotic Car Engines. There's a lot at stake...........

    Now go and try to buy this engine lol. In the U.S. just this Engine, used in unverified condition will cost as much as a used but well maintained and clean BMW that would be faster than this engine can offer. I put this one in the list of REDICULO projects that DO Not make sense unless you are a freak and somehow got money in Surplus and the time as you have no job or business to attend, therefore its a double none sense project.

    If you are going to discard paper gsskets make sure you are not reducing a clearance a gasket might afford ie a rotating part now touch where it won't with a gasket (particularlyolder water pumps). Recommend checking out Loctite 510, 515 and 518. Used in the right places they work extremely well although they look too "skiny". eg Detroit Diesels have a spacer bell housing with Road Ranger transmissions... DO NOT use anything but 518....Dont overuse thread lockers....the lock might 'set 'but it can push out and set in a way yoh 'think the bolt is tight but it is high and hence a gap exists. Later the powdery locker will drop out and you have a loose mating.

    Really enjoyed this one. Very sweet looking ride too. It was especially nice to see you working on a car like the rest of us normies have to....in a garage crawling on the floor and using jack stands. I am somewhat new to the channel and TBH not a real BMW fan, but I am a fan of someone who has a passion for what he does...and does it well. I went to school to be an automotive technician back in the 70s and have worked on all my own vehicles, as well as those of friends and relatives, ever since, so I really appreciate your expertise.     Aftermarket wheels can be great but IMO most people execute them very poorly. I only choose wheels that compliment the styling and intended use of the car. ...of course, if you're looking at a restoration, then OEM is the way to go.
